Online Driver Education Course​​​

About the Course

We have partnered with the National Driver Training Institute to provide our students with the online classroom Virginia teen driver education course. The program consists of at least 30 hours of instructions and include components about alcohol safety, drug abuse awareness, aggressive driving, distracted driving, pedestrian and bicycle safety, handicapped parking, fuel efficient driving practices, motorcycle awareness and organ and tissue donation awareness as required by law.

Important Information

Please read the below statements for the new legislation that became effective on July 1, 2018:

  • The online classroom component of driver education must be completed through a DMV-licensed online driver training school prior to completing the online 90-minute parent/teen component.
  • Only students outside of Planning District 8 are allowed by law to complete the 90-minute component online.

Student Eligibility

You must be at least 15 years and 6 months old to take the online driver education course.

  • All individuals who elect to take the classroom component of the driver's education course online must take the online course through a DMV licensed driver training school.
    • Home-schooled students are exempt from this requirement.

PLEASE NOTE: In order to benefit from the course , you must be able to work independently and be comfortable with using a computer.

Instructions for Taking the Online Course

  • To register for the online driver education course, complete the registration form below. The registration fee of $150 may be paid by cash, money order, credit card or debit card.
  • Once the registration form is received and the course has been paid in full, the student email provided will be used to send the login information for the course. This includes a user name, password, and link to enter the course.
    • ​parent email will receive login information if the student is under age 18.
  • The student with the provided login information will log in and begin the online course as instructed.
  • The student will need to achieve, at minimum, an 80% passing score on written tests. If passing scores are not achieved on the first try, the test must be taken again. The student may take one online test within a 24 hour period.
  • When the student has completed the course they will receive a directive to come to our school to take the final exam. The student will need to contact the school to schedule a time to take the final exam.
  • ​Our school will provide the computer needed to complete the exam. The student takes the final examination online in the presence of the licensed instructor. Upon successful completion of the final exam the student will receive the course completion certificate. If the student fails the examination, the student will be allowed to review any section of the completed course to prepare to take the examination again.

Testing Procedures

Student must schedule a time to take the test prior to arrival

On the day of testing, you must bring the following to the test site:

  • ​Photo identification (DMV issued identification card, school issued identification card, valid passport or military identification)
  • Proof of completion of the online driver education course
  • A completed "Parental Consent for Online Driver Education Examination" (DTS 62), if you are under age 18
  • Proof of completion of of the additional 90-minute parent/teen course if you are under age 18 and live in Planning District 8 (counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William and cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Manassas and Manassas Park)
  • The online driver training school will provide a computer for testing
